titleOfInvention A process for preparing Subbing-Coated Polyester Film
abstract 1,168,171. Coated polyester film. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 30 Nov., 1967 [24 April, 1967], No. 5422/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division G2] Subbing-coated oriented polyester film is prepared by giving the surface of an oriented polyester film an adhesion-improving treatment by electric discharge, a flame or ultraviolet light, surface oxidation or the action of an acid, coating the treated film with a 1 to 15% aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of an aliphatic unsaturated carboxylic acid and at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the copolymer having a Second Order Transition temperature in the range -30‹C. to +30‹C., drying the coated polyester film, and heating the copolymer coating on the polyester film at from 120‹C. to 180‹C. for at least seven seconds to cure the copolymer. The copolymer coated film surface may be overcoated with a hydrophilic colloid layer, e.g. a light sensitive gelatin-silver halide emulsion. The copolymer may be of (a) 70 to 90 percent by weight of an unsaturated ester of a monocarboxylic acid where the alcohol component of the ester has no more than four carbon atoms, (b) 7 to 20 percent by weight of an aliphatic polyfunctional compound containing at least two sites of carbon to carbon unsaturation where at least one of the sites is represented by an allylic or vinylic group, glycidyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, methacrylate esters wherein the alcohol portion of the ester is hydroxy substituted, or fumaric acid, and (c) 3 to 30 percent by weight of itaconic acid, fumaric acid, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, with the proviso that when (b) is fumaric acid (c) is itaconic acid; (a) 70 to 90 parts by weight of vinyl acetate, (b) 7 to 40 parts by weight of a lower alkyl acrylate, and (c) 3 to 30 parts by weight of itaconic acid, fumaric acid, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid; (a) 70 to 95% by weight methyl or ethyl acrylate, (b) 3 to 30% by weight diallyl phthalate or divinylbenzene and (c) 2 to 20% by weight itaconic acid; or as described in Specifications 1,146,215, 1,140,651, 1,125,460, 718,422 and 688,528; examples of which are given. A gelatin layer may be applied to the film prior to the copolymer coating. The oriented film may be heat set prior to being given the adhesion improving treatment. The coating of films of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene terephthalate/isophthalate are specified; the films may include pigments, dyes, or matting agents e.g. silica particles. The subbing composition may be applied to the film by skim, bar, extrusion, or reverse roll coating means.
