1,167,192. Alpha-substituted propionic acids. BOOTS PURE DRUG CO. Ltd. 29 Aug., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 40222/66. Heading C2C. Propionic acids of the general formula R.CH(CH 3 ).COOH, in which R represents (a) a 4-substituted phenyl group the substituent being: alkyl (C 2 -C 6 ), alkenyl (C 2 -C 4 ), cycloalkyl (C 3 -C7), alkoxy (C 3 or C 4 ), alkylthio (C 1 -C 5 ), alkenyloxy (C 3 or C 4 ), alkenylthio (C 3 -C 5 ), cycloalkyloxy (C 3 -C7), cycloalkylthio (C 3 -C 7 ), phenoxy or phenylthio, or (b) the group in which R 2 and R 3 may be the same or different and represent, hydrogen, halogen or alkyl optionally substituted by halogen, alkoxy or alkylthio, are produced by converting an acetophenone of general formula R.COCH 3 into a hydantoin of general formula utilizing an alkali metal cyanide in the presence of ammonium carbonate, hydrolysing the hydantoin to give an alpha-amino acid, R.C.Me(NH 2 ).COOH, alkylating the amino acid to give a novel compound of general formula R.C.Me.(N.Alkyl 2 ).COOH, followed by reductive cleavage of said compound. |
