titleOfInvention Novel Perhalogenated Iodides
abstract 1,167,112. Novel perhalogenated iodides. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 5 Jan., 1968 [6 Jan., 1967], No. 880/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] Novel perhalogenated iodides of the formula wherein each of the R radicals, which may be the same or different, represents a fluorine or chlorine atom or a perfluoroalkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms; each of the Rf radicals, which may be the same or different, represents a fluorine atom or perfluoroalkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms; n is 0 or 1; and X and Y are different and each represents an iodine or fluorine atom, are prepared by heating an olefin having the formula with a mixture of iodine and iodine pentafluoride in which the molar ratio of iodine to iodine pentafluoride is at least 1 : 1. The iodine and iodine pentafluoride mixture can also contain as catalyst metallic aluminium, magnesium, thorium, beryllium, calcium or strontium, and is preferably preheated to 100‹ to 250‹ C. before addition of the olefin.
