titleOfInvention Sulphonates of Polycarboxylic Esters
abstract 1,165,788. Detergent compositions. LA CITRIQUE BELGE N.V. 3 July, 1968 [5 July, 1967; 19 Oct., 1967], Nos. 31014/67 and 47676/67. Heading C5D. [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] A surfactive material is prepared by reacting at least one hydroxy equivalent of a non-ionic surfactant containing at least one hydroxy group, e.g. polyethoxylated (2-50 ethoxy groups) or polypropoxylated C 8-24 monohydric or polyhydric aliphatic or cyclic alcohols, with not more than 4 carboxylic acid equivalents of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid material or the corresponding sulphonated material obtained by sulphonation across the double bond, the ester thereby obtained being converted to the corresponding sulphonate salt, the said unsaturated polycarboxylic acid material being obtained by a process which comprises pyrolyzing an alkaline earth citrate at a temperature of from 250-400‹ C. for a period of time until an increase in titrable alkalinity of the reaction mixture is obtained, and converting the unsaturated salt material thereby obtained to the corresponding acid material. The remaining carboxyl groups (if any) are preferably esterified with one or more monohydric or polyhydric alcohols, e.g. C 1-24 monohydric alcohols. If desired some or all of the remaining carboxylic groups may be reacted so that their acid function becomes modified e.g. by conversion to salts (e.g. Na or ammonium), amides or amines. Cleansing compositions containing the surfactive material may be in the form of liquids, gels, emulsions, paste or powders, and may include builders, fillers and optical whiteners. In an example a composition powder comprised 5% of a surfactant according to the invention, 35% Na tripolyphosphate, 20% Na perborate, 7% Na metasilicate, and 15% of Na sulphate; together with trace amounts of optical whitening agents and Na carboxy methyl cellulose. A similar composition contains in addition 2% by weight of a mixture of equal parts of two ethoxylated nonyl phenol. The compositions may contain not more than 10% of a sequestering agent.
