titleOfInvention 2-Methylene-Steroids
abstract 1,164,646. 2-Methylene steroids. STERLING DRUG Inc. 17 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 38279/68. Divided out of 1,164,644. Heading C2U. The invention comprises (1) a process for preparing a 2-methylene-3-oxo-steroid (the steroid moiety having from 17 to 23 carbon atoms exclusive of ester radicals and the 2-methylene group and being a member of the estrane, 18- nor-estrane, androstane, etiochlolane, cholane, pregnane or allopregnane series) wherein a 4<SP>1</SP>- hydroxyspiro-[steroid-2,5<SP>1</SP>-m-dioxan]-3-one is treated under mild alkaline conditions; and (2) steroids of the formula (wherein R is acetyl or a ketal thereof, 1,2-dihydroxyethyl or 1-hydroxyethyl; X is H 2 , H(α- or #-OH) or O; X<SP>11</SP> is H, alkyl or halogen; Y and Y<SP>1</SP> are H or CH 3 ; and Z is α-OH or α-H, or R and Z together are 17α,20; 20,21-bismethylenedioxy, there optionally being #<SP>4</SP> and/or #<SP>6</SP> double bonds present) and esters thereof derived from C 1-12 carboxylic acids. Protected, e.g. ketalized, keto groups may be hydrolysed to free keto groups.
