titleOfInvention Oxdiazole Derivatives as Scintillation Substances
abstract 1,164,606. Luminescent materials and uses thereof. CIBA Ltd. 26 Aug., 1966 [15 Sept., 1965], No. 38478/66. Heading C4S. [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Atomic disintegrations accompanied by the emission of #-rays are counted by means of the scintillation counting method, in which there is used as scintillator oxdiazoles having the formula in which A 1 represents a C 3 -C 7 branched alkyl group, m and n are each 1 or 2, and B 1 is a hydrogen atom, a phenyl group, a C 1 -C 7 alkyl group or a C 1 -C 4 alkoxy group. The scintillator is preferably used in a solution in a concentration of 0À01 to 5% by weight or may be dispersed in a shaped polymeric mass of polystyrene or polyvinyltoluene for instance, to form a plastics scintillator. Suitable solvents are, for example, aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, aliphatic hydrocarbons and mixtures of these. The preferred solvents are toluene, a mixture of toluene and methanol, a mixture of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, toluene and naphthalene, a mixture of dioxan, toluene and naphthalene and a mixture of toluene, methanol and ethanolamine. Conventional methods of preparation are described and a number of specific compounds instanced.
