A lubricant comprises a hydrocarbon oil and 0À1-90 wt. per cent of a sulphurized normal calcium alkyl phenolate having a calcium metal ratio of 1, a calcium content of 1-8 wt. per cent, and a sulphur content of 0À5-12 wt. per cent wherein said phenolate is produced by contacting in said oil (1) a C 4 -C 100 alkyl-phenol, (2) sulphur and (3) calcium alkoxyalkoxide of formula Ca(OAOR<SP>1</SP>) 2 , where A is C 1 -C 6 alkylene and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 25 alkyl, at 0-250‹ C. with a mole ratio of (1): (2) of 1:0À15 to 1: 8 and a mole ratio of (1): (3) of 1À8: 1 to 2À2: 1. The oil may be mineral or a polyalkylene, e.g. polypropylene and polyisobutylene. The composition may also contain an ethoxylated derivative of polyisobutene thiophosphonic acid. |
