titleOfInvention Process for the Production of a Nitro-Nitroso Dimer
abstract 1,163,939. Nitro-nitroso dimers. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. 23 Dec., 1966 [30 Dec., 1965], No. 57809/66. Heading C2C. Nitro-nitroso dimers are obtained by reacting a charge stock comprising an olefinic hydrocarbon consisting of a monoolefin or a non- conjugated diolefin with a nitrosating agent comprising a mixture of NO and NO 2 wherein the molar ratio of NO to NO 2 is at least 1 : 1 under conditions of temperature and pressure such that the NO 2 is substantially entirely in the vapour phase and wherein the stoichiometric ratio of the nitrosating agent to the olefinic hydrocarbon is less than 0.5. The nitrosating agent may be N 2 O 3 or NO catalysed with NO 2 and the reaction may be effected at a temperature between 0‹ C. and the melting point of the dimer, optionally in the presence of a diluent such as a paraffin or an aromatic hydrocarbon. The reaction is preferably effected under conditions such that the dimer at least partially precipitates during reaction. In specific examples the olefinic starting materials employed are octene-1, hexene-1, dodecene-1, hexadecene-1, octene-2, 1,5-hexadiene, 1,4- pentadiene and cyclohexene. Other similar starting materials are also described.
