abstract | 1,162,780. Diene polymerization. TEXASU.S. CHEMICAL CO. 15 Aug., 1968 [6 Sept., 1967], No. 39045/68. Heading C3P. Dienes are polymerized or copolymerized in a solvent in the presence of hydrogen and an organolithium catalyst. When the diene is copolymerized, it is preferred that the solvent consists of a mixture of an inert hydrocarbon solvent and a polar solvent such as an ether, thioether or amine. In the example, butadiene and styrene are copolymerized in hexone, containing a small amount of tetrahydrofuran, in the presence of hydrogen and butyllithium. A thiobisphenol antioxidant is added to the product and water is also added to short-stop the reaction. The polymer is separated from the solvent by steam stripping, and is dried. |
