titleOfInvention Electrodeposition of Polymers.
abstract 1,161,819. Polymer compositions for electrodeposition coating. GLASURIT-WERKE M. WINKELMANN A.G. 22 Dec., 1966 [31 Dec., 1965], No. 57581/66. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C7] Compositions suitable for coating metal or other conductive articles by electrodeposition comprise, in aqueous solution having a pH of 6.5-9, a certain, defined (meth)acrylic copolymer, and an ester component containing free carboxylic acid groups, which is an alkyd resin, a saturated and/or unsaturated fatty acid modified alkyd resin, a maleinized alkyd resin, or an addition product of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and an unsaturated oil or fat. In examples the (meth)acrylic copolymer is a copolymer of (a) butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid and N-(2-oxahexyl)-acrylamide, (b) butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, N-(2-oxahexyl)-acrylamide and styrene, (c) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, acrylic acid and N - (2 - oxahexyl) - acrylamide, and (d) 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, acrylic acid, N-(2-oxahexyl)- acrylamide, styrene and 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate. The copolymers are added to the aqueous medium in the form of n- or iso-butanol solutions, and neutralized with an ethanolamine. The ester components used in the examples are (a) a maleinized oil obtained by heating wood oil with fumaric acid and neutralizing with dimethylethanolamine and (b) a dehydrated castor oil alkyd resin having an oil content of 40%, a phthalic acid anhydride content of 29% and an acid number of 35-40. Other components of the exemplified compositions are phenol-formaldehyde resin, lampblack, titanium dioxide, iron oxides and butylene glycol. Coatings obtained from the compositions are baked at 150-170‹ C.
