[Also in Division C4] 2,5 - Diketo - 3 - hydroxy - 1 - [2<SP>1</SP> - N - ethyl - N - (3<SP>11 </SP>- methylphenyl) - aminoethyl] - pyrrolidine (I) is prepared by condensing N-(2-aminoethyl)-N-ethyl-m-toluidine with malic acid. 2,5 - Diketo - 3 - phenylcarbamoyloxy - 1 - [2<SP>1</SP> - N - ethyl - N - (3<SP>11</SP> - methylphenyl) - aminoethyl]- pyrrolidine is prepared by treating (I) with phenyl isocyanate. 2,5 - Diketo - 3 - hydroxy - 1 - [2<SP>1</SP>- N - (3<SP>111</SP> - chloro - 2<SP>111</SP> - hydroxypropyl) - N - (3<SP>11</SP> - methylphenyl) - aminoethyl] - pyrrolidine is prepared by reacting N - 2 - aminoethyl - n - toluidine first with malic acid and then with epichlorhydrin.
