[Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Photographic colloid compositions containing gelatine or a synthetic polymer containing carboxyl groups are hardened by incorporating a compound containing two or more beta-vinylsulphonylethyl groups attached to tertiary or quaternary nitrogen atoms and/or to ether oxygen atoms. Compounds specified include those of the formula (VA) m Z where V is the beta-vinylsulphonylethyl group, A is -N(R)-, -N<SP>+</SP> (R) 2 - .X<SP>-</SP>or -O-, m is 2 and Z is an alkylene chain which may be interrupted by -O-, -SO 2 -, -NHCONH-, -CH=CH-, -C#C- or p-phenylene, and more particularly bis[2-(2- vinylsulphonylethoxy)ethyl] sulphone, N:N<SP>1</SP>- bis[2-(2-vinylsulphonylethoxy) ethyl] urea: N:N<SP>1</SP> -bis(2-vinylsulphonylethyl)piperazine; N:N<SP>1</SP>-bis(2-vinylsulphonylethyl)-N:N<SP>1</SP>-dimethylpiperazine bis(perchlorate); N:N<SP>1</SP>-bis(2-vinylsulphonylethyl)-N:N:N<SP>1</SP> :N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethyl-2-butene- 1:4-diamine bis(p-toluene sulphonate) and the corresponding bis(fluoborate); N:N<SP>1</SP>-bis(2-vlnylsulphonylethyl)-N:N:N<SP>1</SP> :N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethyl-ethylenediamine bis (P-toluenesuiphonate); 1:2-bis-(2 vinylsulphonylethoxy) ethane; 1 :4-bis(2-vinylsulphonylethoxy) butane and 1:14-bis(vinylsulphonyl)-3:6:9:12-tetraoxatetradecane. The compositions may be coated to form layers which may be silver halide emulsion layers and contain colour couplers.
