titleOfInvention Nickel-Containing Monoalkyl Phosphites.
abstract 1,157,530. Nickel-containing monoalkyl phosphites and co-ordination derivatives thereof. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. 9 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 11192/67. Heading C2C. The invention comprises nickel compounds of the formula (I) Ni[OP(OR)(OH)] 2 , where R is a straight or branched chain C 1 -C 12 alkyl group and (II) L 2 -Ni[OP(OR)(OH)] 2 , wherein L is a ligand containing a N, O or P atom as electron donor and R is as defined above. Compounds I may be prepared by reacting an alkali metal salt of the formula (MO)P(OR)(OH), wherein M is alkali metal with a nickel salt in solution in a polar organic solvent under strictly anhydrous conditions, normally at room temperature and at atmospheric pressure and the compounds II may be obtained by reacting the ligand L with a compound I in solution in an organic solvent, e.g. dimethoxyethane, under strictly anhydrous conditions. The ligand L may be a C 1 -C 12 alcohol, or an organic phosphine or phosphite, e.g. n-butanol, 2- ethylhexanol, tri-2-ethyl hexyl phosphite, and tri-n-butyl or tri-phenyl-phosphines or-phosphites. The alkali metal salt (MO)P(OR)(OH) used in preparing compounds (I) may be obtained by dissolving an alkali metal hydroxide in a non-aqueous medium, e.g. toluene, under reflux, and reacting the solution with a dialkyl phosphite. In preparing compounds (II) the compounds I may, after isolation, be dissolved in a non-polar organic solvent and the ligand added in solution in the same or another non- polar solvent or the reaction to form compounds (I) may be carried out without isolation of the nickel compound (I) and subsequently reacting it with the ligand L in solution in a polar organic solvent under strictly anhydrous conditions. Nickel mono-butyl phosphite and nickel mono-(2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphite have nematocidal properties.
