Chlorinated amides of acetoacetic acid having the formula CH 3 .CO.CHCl.CO.NHR, where R is an alkyl group which may be substituted by halogen or may be interrupted by oxygen or sulphur atoms, or an aralkyl group are produced by reacting compounds of the formula CH 3 .CO.CH 2 CO.NHR with an equivalent of chlorine, at a temperature below 0 C., in the presence of water and urea. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a substance which lowers the freezing point of the reaction mixture, e.g. an alcohol or another organic solvent. |
