titleOfInvention Treatment of Shaped Articles
abstract 1,156,784. Polyurethanes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 Nov., 1966 [24 Aug., 1965], No. 36260/65. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] A linear polyurethane copolymer used in the treatment of shaped articles is comprised essentially of structural units having the formula in which A is the residue after removal of the hydroxyl groups from an aliphatic dihydric alcohol having a molecular weight of less than 200, B is the residue after removal of the hydroxyl groups from a polyalkyleneoxy glycol having a molecular weight of at least 500, R is the residue after the removal of the isocyanate groups from an organic diisocyanate and m and n are integers each having a value of at least unity. The residues A may be derived from ethylene glycol, 1,2- or 1,3- propylene glycol, 1,2-, 1,3-, 2,3- or 1,4-butylene glycol, 1,5-pentane diol, 1,6-hexanediol, neopentylene glycol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol or N-alkyl or aryl derivatives of diethanolamine or a mixture thereof and the residues B may be derived from polyalkyleneoxy glycols having the formula HO-(alkylene-0) p -H in which p is an integer having a value of at least 7 and the alkylene groups contain 2-12 carbonatoms. The diisocyanate used to prepare the copolymer may be 1,4-butylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate, methylcyclo-hexylene 2,4- or 2,6- diisocyanate, m or p phenylene diisocyanate, tolylene 2,4- or 2,6-diisocyanate diphenylmethane 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanate or naphthylene 1,5-diisocyanate. The copolymers may be applied to the shaped articles as aqueous solutions or dispersions which may contain organic solvents. The treatment compositions may also contain cross-linking agents, e.g. formaldehyde, acrolein, glyoxal. cyanuric halides and dihalogenotriazine derivatives, or resin precondensates, e.g. condensates of formaldehyde with urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide, amides, amines, carbamates, aminotriazines, urons, ureins, ureides, imidazolidones, pyridones or triazones or lower alkyl ethers thereof, methylol derivatives of urea/formaldehyde polycondensates or of polyacrylamides or lower alkyl ethers thereof, or polyacetals and a catalyst, e.g. oxalic acid, zinc or magnesium chloride, mineral acid salts of organic amines or ammonium sulphate, chloride or thiocyanate.
