1,155,205. Sulphonated alkaryl compounds. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 7 April, 1966 [8 April, 1965; 23 Feb., 1966], No. 60794/68. Divided out of 1,155,203. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Oil-soluble sulphonates are prepared by conventional sulphonation of a di-alkyl aryl compound-containing composition produced either by alkylating a straight chain mono-alkyl aryl compound with a branched chain alkylating agent or vice versa (see Divisions C4-C5). The straight chain alkylating agent is a halogenated C 8 -C 18 fraction, and the branched chain a propylene tetramer containing C 9 -C 16 alkenes. The aryl compound may be benzene (preferred), toluene, xylene, naphthalene or a mixture thereof. The di-alkyl aryl fraction is converted to free sulphonic acid, or a sulphonate, e.g. by reaction with an inorganic base, alcoholate, or lower alkoxy ethanolate; Ba, Ca, Mg, Zn, Sn, Co, Mn, Ti, Pb, Cu, Cd, alkali and alkaline earth metal, amine and ammonium salts are specified, and Ba exemplified. |
