titleOfInvention Hydroxyphenyl Anthranilic Acid Derivatives Capable of Absorbing 'Ultra-Violet Light and Compositions containing them
abstract 1,153,994. U/V light-absorbing preparations. ASPRO-NICHOLAS Ltd. 15 July, 1966 [21 July, 1965; 1 March, 1966], Nos. 30924/65 and 8989/66. Heading A5B [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Compounds of formula I or II in which X is an oxygen atom or an imino group; R and R 1 , which may be the same or different, are each hydrogen, a C 1 - C 12 alkyl or alkoxy group, a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, a nitro group, a sulphonic acid group, or an amino group of formula in which R 4 is hydrogen or a C 1 - C 4 alkyl group and R 5 is hydrogen, a C 1 - C 4 alkyl group, a 2 - hydroxy benzoyl group or a 2,4 - dichlorotriazine group linked in the 6 - position, R 2 is halogen, C 1 - C 12 alkyl or alkoxy, a sulphonic acid radical, a nitro group or carboxyl; R 3 is hydrogen, a C 1 - C 12 alkyl group optionally substituted by a sulphonic acid radical or an amino group and n is an integer from 0 to 4 (R 2 being the same or different when n is 2, 3 or 4), are used as sun-screening agents in cosmetics and to prevent degradation of perfumes due to the action of ultra violet light. They may be incorporated in a liquid or semi-liquid carrier to give a dermatologically acceptable composition to give a composition which diminishes burning of the skin caused by ultra-violet light. Examples are given of the preparation of creams containing (a) n - hexyl N - (2 - hydroxy - benzoyl) anthranilate (Ex. 23) and (b) isobutyl N - (2 - hydroxybenzoyl) antbranilate (Ex. 24) which protect the skin from ultra-violet light and the protection of a perfume for deterioration of colour by the addition of ethyl N - (2 - hydroxybenzoyl) anthraniliate (Ex. 25).
