titleOfInvention Process for the Production of Liquid Low Molecular Weight Polymers
abstract 1,152,689. Liquid polymers of butadiene. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 20 Sept., 1966 [21 Sept., 1965], No. 41935/66. Heading C3P. Liquid polybutadienes, liquid copolymers of butadiene and other dienes and liquid copoly mers of butadiene and styrene or substituted styrenes having an iodine number at least 90% of that theoretically calculated and at least 95% non-terminal double bonds, at least 65% thereof having cis-configuration and viscosities of from 50 to 30,000 centipoises (at 50‹ C.) are prepared by polymerization of butadiene or copolymerization of butadiene with conjugated dienes containing more than four carbon atoms or of butadiene with styrene or substituted styrenes in inert diluents in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one diluent-soluble nickel compound and at least one diluent-soluble aluminium compound having the general formula R n Alx 3-n in which R denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl radical having 1-12 carbon atoms, X denotes halogen and n has a value of 1 or 2, if one aluminium compound is used and a value of 0À5 to 2À5 if two or more aluminium compounds are used, the polymerization being carried out in the presence of compounds containing elements of Groups V B and VIB of Mendeleeff's Periodic System which bear free electron pairs and 0À001 to 1 mole of nickel compound per 1 mole of aluminium compound and 0À0001 to 0À5 mole of aluminium compound per 1 mole of butadiene or 1 mole of the mixture of butadiene and other dienes or 1 mole of the mixture of butadiene and styrene or substituted styrene being used. The catalyst may also include a compound of the formula R n AlX 3-n , where n is 0 or 3. In examples are used as diluents: carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chloroform and hexane; as nickel compounds nickel (11) acetylacetonate and nickel (11) octoate; as aluminium compounds: ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and diethyl aluminium chloride; as compounds bearing free electron pairs: diethylamine, anisol and aniline. The butadiene may contain small amounts of regulating impurities. The catalyst is decomposed with methanol and the polymer purified by washing with acetic acid.
