titleOfInvention Process for the Production of Silicon-Containing Trioxane Copolymers
abstract 1,152,550. Silicon-containing trioxane copolymers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 21 Dec., 1967 [12 Jan., 1967], No. 58011/67. Heading C3T. Silicon-containing trioxane copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing trioxane with 0À1 to 50 mol. per cent of a compound wherein each R represents an alkyl or phenyl group, and X represents an alkylene group or - SiR 2 -O- or -SiR 2 -O-CH 2 -, at 50- 120‹ C. in the presence of a cationic initiator. Suitable compounds listed have R= methyl or ethyl and X = -SiMe 2 O-, -SiMe 2 -OCH 2 -, -CH 2 CH 2 -, -(CH 2 ) 3 - or -(CH 2 ) 5 -. Suitable initiators are H 2 SO 4 , HClO 4 , alkane sulphonic acids, p-toluene sulphonic acid, FeCl3, FeBr 3 , SbCl 5 , TiCl 4 , SnCl 4 and [Et 3 O]+[FeCl 4 ]-. The reaction may be conducted in suspension or solution, and the crude product may be suspended in an aqueous or alcoholic solution of a base, and optionally heated at 160-220‹ C. in vacuo. Other comonomers may be incorporated, e.g. styrene, acrylonitrile, ethyl vinyl ether, methyl vinyl sulphone, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, 1: 3-dioxolane, di- and tri-ethylene glycol formals, bis-(alkylsulphonyl)-imidazolidines, alkylsulphonyl oxazolidines, hexamethyl cyclotrisiloxane, octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane, and 2: 2: 8: 8-tetramethyl-2 : 8-disila- 1: 4: 6-trioxacyclo-octane. In examples, 2: 2: 5: 5 - tetramethyl - 2: 5 - disila - 1: 3 - dioxolane (X = -SiMe 2 -O-) is copolymerized with trioxane in presence of FeBr 3 alone or in cyclohexane in presence of triethyloxonium tetrachloroferrate.
