Photopolymerizable lacquers which contain a polyvinyl alcohol or a copolymer of vinyl alcohol, wherein 20 to 60% of the hydroxyl groups have been esterified by means of cinnamoyl chloride, 10 to 60% have been esterified by means of a nitrated aromatic acid, and where relevant the residual hydroxyl groups are free, may be prepared by swelling the polyvinyl alcohol or copolymer of vinyl alcohol in pyridine and esterifying it by simultaneous addition of cinnamoyl chloride and the acid chloride of a nitrated aromatic acid. In the examples polyvinyl alcohol and a vinyl alcohol - vinyl chloride copolymer are treated with cinnamoyl chloride and o-and p-nitrobenzoyl chloride.
