titleOfInvention Improvements relating to a Method and a Device for the Intensive Stirring of a Liquid.
abstract 1,151,753. Stirring liquids; zone-melting. NETHERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRY, TRADE & COMMERCE. 5 Aug., 1966 [5 Aug., 1965], No. 35246/66. Headings B1C and BIS. [Also in Division G1] In a method and ap-paratus for stirring a a solid, the solid is sub-jected to a varying rotation such that theliquid in contact with mean average tangen-tial acceleration and retardation along theborder surface between the solid and the liquidare at least 200 cm per sec for a duration ofat least 0.03 sec each, the time between thebeginning of an acceleration and that of the subsequent rethan 0.1 sec, and thetardation is not less period during whichthere is no acceleration or retardation orone of less than 200 cm per sec per sec isnot more than one second. Convenientlythe solid is givep a motion of rotaryreciprocation. As applied to a zonemelting apparatus. Fig. 1, a glass tube 8 rotates with a plug 13 which is given a suitable motion of rotary reciprocation by a periodically reversing motor 14. Five cylindrical heaters 9 can slide along the tube and are attached to an air manifold 4 having cooling nozzles 6: A synchronous motor 3 drives a gear 2 engaging a rack 1 which lifts the air manifold and heaters until the lifting mechanism is disconnected by the recess in the gear and the manifold and heaters fall back to their original position. The weight of lift is the same as the spacing between successive heaters so that the melt zones 11 move continuously along the tube 8. Naphthalene or bismuth may be treated.
