titleOfInvention Improvements in the Production of Quinone
abstract 1,151,673. Quinone. INSTYTUT PRZEMYSLU ORGANICZNEGO. 2 Feb., 1968 [4 Feb., 1967; 24 June, 1967], No. 5535/68. Heading C2C. In the manufacture of quinone by oxidizing aniline with manganese dioxide, the excess manganese dioxide in the reaction product is reduced to water-soluble manganous salts before the quinone is separated from the reaction mixture. Specified reducing agents are hydrogen peroxide, nitrites and alkali-metal sulphites, bisulphites and hyposulphites. The quinone may then be separated by steam distillation. Alternatively, the quinone may be partly reduced to form quinhydrone, or sufficient hydroquinone may be added to form quinhydrone which, in either event, is then separated from the reaction mixture and finally reduced to hydroquinone.
