abstract | 1,151,274. Blends of high unsaturation rubbers with low unsaturation rubbers. COPOLYMER RUBBER & CHEMICAL CORP. 8 May, 1967 [9 May, 1966; 20 May, 1966; 3 Aug., 1966; 30 Aug., 1966; 17 April, 1967], No. 21307/67. Headings C3P and C3Q. A blend comprises (A) 5-95 parts by weight of a highly unsaturated rubber which is natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, polybutadiene rubber, polyisoprene rubber, a polymer of a C 4 -C 10 halogen-containing conjugated diene, or a copolymer of a C 4 -C 10 conjugated diene and acrylonitrile or a C 1 -C 5 a-alkyl acrylonitrile, and (B) 95-5 parts by weight of a material which is either (1) a rubbery interpolymer of ethylene, at least one C 3 -C 16 a-monoolefin, and a polyunsaturated bridged ring compound which contains at least one ethylenic double bond in one of the bridged rings having an effective unsaturation level (defined) of at least 7 carbon-tocarbon double bonds per 1000 carbon atoms, or (2) a mixture of 5-95 parts of (1) and 95-5 parts of a rubbery interpolymer of ethylene, at least one C 3 -C 16 a-monoolefin and a polymer, the two interpolymers having different effective unsaturation levels and the mixture having an effective unsaturation level of at least 7 carbon to-carbon double bonds per 1000 carbon atoms. The polymer B(1) is preferably a copolymer of ethylene, propylene, and 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene and is made by polymerizing in the presence of a mixture of ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and vanadyl chloride using a higher than usual amount of polyene. The polymer solution is coagulated with water. The polymer may be dissolved in solvent and then turned into a latex. The blend may be used in the manufacture of tyres. |
