R 1 , R 4 , R 7 and R 8 may be H, halogen, hydrocarbon, alkyl, hydroxyl or esterified hydroxyl. In examples glass and steel are coated with polymers prepared from bicyclo - 2,2,2 - octene - 7 - tetracarboxylic acid, and 4,4' - diamino - diphenylmethane (1) and 7, 8 - diphenyibi - cyclo - 2,2,2 - octene - 7 - tetracarboxylic acid and 4,4' - diamino - diphenylether (5). Cresol is used as solvent.
