titleOfInvention Driving system for diesel-electric vehicles
abstract 1,149,179. Automatic control of torque. ALLM NNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Aug.31, 1966 [Sept.1, 1965], No.38819/66. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H2] In a diesel-electric traction system the output torque of a constant speed diesel engine 1 is controlled by regulation of the field 3a of a generator 3 in response to the difference between the actual torque measured by a shaft deformation transducer 2 and a reference value 22, which is adjusted by an accelerator pedal 24. The regulation is effected by varying exciter fields 4b, 4c by an undisclosed device 8 in series with a battery 9. There is one traction motor 11a. . . 11d for each wheel; they each have a main series field 13 and an opposing shunt field 14 which effects field weakening at high speeds but is ineffective at low speeds when generator voltage is low and series field current high. In the event of slipping of one wheel the series field of that machine can be short circuited by a switch 16 or steps of a normally short circuited series resistor 19 can be inserted. Reversing switches 17 are provided. Normally all the shunt fields 14 are in series with each other across the generator 3, by for dynamic braking they are each in parallel with the exciter 4 which now has an auxiliary field winding 4a energized from the battery 9 through a pedal operated braking controller 25. During braking generator field 3a is energized from the battery through variable resistor 23. The machine 3 now acts as a motor in series with parallel connected groups, each comprising one of the motors 11 and one of the resistors 19. Braking is regulated by the resistors 19, and the machine continues to absorb power, by driving the diesel against its friction, when resistors 19 are shorted out.
