Metadioxanes are prepared by reacting a ketone or an aldehyde having an activated methylene group with formaldehyde or an oligomer of formaldehyde in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst. Aldehydes or ketones which may be used are represented by the formula wherein R B is hydrogen, an alkyl, aryl, or heterocyclic group and R A is hydrogen, an alkyl, aryl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl or heterocyclic group, or R A and R B together with the carbonyl group adjacent to R B may form part of a ring. |
