titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to novel steroids and the manufacture thereof
abstract 1,147,801. Steroids. UPJOHN CO. 6 April, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 15374/66. Heading C2U. The invention comprises compounds having the general formula wherein # is a generic expression denoting α- or #-bonds and mixtures thereof; the 4(5)-carbon atom linkage is a single or double bond with the proviso that the 5-hydrogen atom is absent when the 4(5) carbon atom linkage is a double bond; Q is hydrogen, methyl, C#CA, CH= CHA or CH 2 CH 2 A; R 1 and R 2 are selected from hydrogen and methyl, Z is hydrogen, (C 1 -C 12 ) alkyl or a (C 1 -C 12 ) acyl radical of an organic carboxylic acid and A is hydrogen, (C 1 -C 12 ) alkyl, chlorine, bromine or trifluoromethyl and a process for the production of the above compounds wherein Q is C#CA which comprises subjecting to alkynation at the 17α-position a corresponding compound of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are defined above. The 17α- alkynyl compounds can be reduced to form the corresponding saturated compounds. In another process 3-desoxy compounds are obtained from the corresponding 3-keto compounds by forming a 3-thioketal derivative with an alkanethiol followed by desulphurization, e.g. with sodium metal in liquid ammonia. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic, androgenic, anti-fertility, anti-androgenic and anti-estrogenic activities containing the above compounds are administered orally or parenterally.
