Photographic gelatino silver halide emulsions are sensitized by adding simultaneously auric trichloride and a compound of one of the formulae:- where X is -S- or -CH(R 3 )-, Y is -C(R 6 )(R 7 )- or -C(CH 2 ) n in which n is 2 to 7, R 1 is hydrogen or alkyl, R 2 and R 3 are each hydrogen, alkyl, -NH 2 or -CONH 2 , R 4 and R 5 are each hydrogen, alkyl, -NH 2 or -CH 2 R 8 , R 6 and R 7 are each alkyl and R 8 is halogen, -NH 2 , -OH, -SH, -NHR, -NR 2 , -OR or -SR in which R is alkyl. The silver halide is preferably silver chloride or silver bromochloride having at least 60 mol. per cent of silver chloride. A specified compound of the above formulae is
