titleOfInvention Catalytic oxidation of olefins
abstract 1,147,211. Unsaturated esters. UNION OIL CO. OF CALIFORNIA. 11 May, 1966, No. 20982/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Hydrocarbon olefines are oxidized to unsaturated esters of alkanoic acids e.g. ethylene to vinyl acetate in a reaction medium containing less than 20% water, an alkali metal carboxylate of the alkanoic acid, between 0À1 and 10 weight per cent of a bromide or chloride compound, a Group VIII noble metal, and from 0À to 5 weight per cent of a salt of a multivalent heavy metal with a more positive oxidation potential than the Group VIII metal, the solvent is contacted with oxygen and a vanadium compound to destructively oxidize the oxalic acid by-products. The reaction may be in two zones or the reaction and regeneration stages may be in a common zone and flow diagrams are given. The crude oxidate may be reduced with gases such as carbon monoxide or olefines. Inorganic or organic vanadium compounds are specified and the carboxylic acids used may be those with 2-10 carbon atoms. Examples describe the use of ammonium vanadate, vanadium tetroxide, and vanadyl chloride in the catalyst composition. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,032,325.
