titleOfInvention | Fire-resistant acrylonitrile polymers |
abstract | 1,147,180. Fire-resistant acrylonitrile polymers. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 2 Dec., 1966 [17 Feb., 1966], No. 54164/66. Heading C3P. Articles of manufacture comprise an acrylonitrile polymer containing at least 70% by weight acrylonitrile and, as fire-resistant additive, either (a) a finely dispersed, solid, water-insoluble, tertiary organic phosphine compound or an oxide or sulphide thereof having a melting point of at least 79‹ C. or (b) a finely dispersed mixture of (i) a solid, water-insoluble, brominated and/or chlorinated aromatic compound having a melting point above 100‹ C. and (ii) a solid, water-insoluble, organic phosphine compound having a melting point of at least 79‹ C., or an antimony oxide or an alkali metal salt of an acid derived from an antimony oxide having a melting point above 100‹ C. The articles, e.g. fibres, can be obtained by a shaping process using a solution of the acrylonitrile polymer in a solvent therefor, the solution having dispersed therein a fire-resistant additive as specified above. Suitable phosphine compounds include tribenzylphosphine and triphenyl-phosphine and the oxides and sulphides thereof. Bromo- or chloroadditives specified are hexabromobenzene, bispentabromophenyl ether, 2,4, 6-tribromoaniline, hexachlorobenzene, pentachlorophenol, pentabromophenol, pentabromomonochlorobenzene, 1,4,5,8 - tetra - bromonaphthalene, hexabromonaphthalenes and octachloronaphthalene. Specified antimony compounds are antimony trioxide and sodium antimonate. In examples the polymers used are acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate copolymers, and fibres thereof are spun from aqueous sodium thiocyanate solutions. The fibres can be dyed and in some cases are blended with similar fibres not containing fire-resistant additive. |
