titleOfInvention Helicon wave amplifying systems
abstract 1,147,056. Semi-conductor devices. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 22 March, 1965 [25 March, 1965], No. 12505/66. Heading H1K. A helicon wave amplifier comprises two onecomponent plasma supporting media with a common interface, means for providing a magnetic field in the media parallel to the interface and for producing a current parallel to the interface in at least one of the media such as to cause interaction between the resultant surface wave at the interface and the bulk helicon wave to provide a net gain, and signal input and output arrangements. In a typical embodiment a first plasma supporting medium is sandwiched between a pair of second plasma supporting media, all three media being of doped lead telluride, though other semi-conductors, semi-metals and metals are suitable. The media may be supported in a rectangular waveguide with the interfaces parallel to a wall and the magnetic field and current running along the length of the guide, the current being confined to the first plasma. Matching may be provided by wedges of dielectric attached to the leading and trailing ends of the sandwich or by tapering off the carrier concentration at the ends of the sandwich. Improved coupling may instead be provided by a linear to circular polarization mode converter. In another arrangement the media, mutually insulated along their lengths, are interconnected at the ends so that the directions of current flow in the central and outer media are opposed. In both arrangements the current level is adjusted so that the Doppler shifted dielectric constant in the medium of lower dielectric constant exceeds that in the other. An arrangement of media in annular layers inserted between the inner and outer conductors of a coaxial line is operated in the same way. Yet another embodiment consists of a pair of superposed planar media with chamfered ends between which the biasing current is pasesd with input and output coils dispersed at the ends adjacent the bias current electrodes.
