titleOfInvention | Improving the bond strength of elastic plastics to tyre cord filaments |
abstract | 1,146,303. Compositions containing polyvinyl pyridine. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 6 May, 1966 [7 May, 1965], No. 20028/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] A composition used to improve the bonding of cord filaments to a copolymer of ethylene or propylene with one or more α-olefins and one or more polyenes comprises a mixture containing (a) an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of ethylene or propylene, one or more α-olefines and one or more polyenes, (b) an aqueous dispersion of a homopolymer of vinylpyridine or a substituted vinyl pyridine and (c) an aqueous solution of a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, the weight ratio of copolymer to polyvinyl pyridine being 99À9 : 0À1 to 60 : 40. Other monomers used in preparing the copolymer include α- butylene, α-pentene, hexadiene-1,5, hexadiene- 1,4, dicyclopentadiene, cyclooctadiene, methylcyclooctadiene, 1,4,9-decatriene and 1,2,4-trivinylcyclohexane. The mixture may be produced by mixing solutions of the copolymer and polyvinylpyridine in benzene, dispersing the resulting solution in water containing an emulsifier, e.g. an alkyl arylsulphonate, alkyl sulphonate, alkyl sulphate or condensation product of a phenol or alcohol with ethylene oxide, distilling off the benzene, optionally heating at 50-100‹ C. for several hours and concentrating the mixture to the desired solids content, or by preparing dispersions of the copolymer and polyvinylpyridine separately and then mixing them and optionally heating for several hours at 50-100‹ C. The solution of the resorcinol-formaldehyde resin is added to these mixtures. |
