titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to antifreeze
abstract 1,145,997. Antifreeze. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 2 May, 1966 [2 June, 1965], No. 23505/65. Divided out of 1,138,062. Heading C4X. An antifreeze composition comprises a watermiscible alcohol, an alkali metal tetraborate, an alkali metal metaborate, an alkali metal phosphate comprising an alkali metal dihydrogen phosphate, a dialkali metal hydrogen phosphate or a mixture thereof, and a heterocyclic benzocompound with the general formula in which the benzene ring may contain at least one substituent alkyl radical, and either B represents a CSH or CSM group (where M represents an alkali metal atom) when A represents an oxygen or sulphur atom or a NH group, or B represents a nitrogen atom or a CH group when A represents a NH group, the alkali metal tetraborate, alkali metal metaborate, and alkali metal phosphate being present in such quantities that the pH of a 50% by volume solution of the anti-freeze composition in water is not greater than 10À0 and the anti-freeze composition does not form a precipitate on standing at ambient temperature for one month. The benzocompound may be 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, 4-ethyl-2-mercaptobenzthiazole, 2 - mercapto - 4,5 - dimethylbenzthiazole, sodium 2 - mercaptobenzthiazole, potassium 2 - mercaptobenzthiazole, 2 - mercaptobenzimidazole, benztriazole, 4 - methylbenztriazole, 5 - methyl - benztriazole, benzimidazole, 4 - methyl - benzimidazole, 5-methylbenzimidazole, or 5,6-dimethyl-benzimidazole. The borates may be of sodium or potassium; in all the examples the phosphates are of potassium. One example also includes tripotassium phosphate. Anti-foams such as silicone oils, polyglycols, e.g. polyoxypropylene glycols tipped with ethylene oxide, mineral oils, iso-octanol, C 7 -C 9 oxo alcohols, organic phosphates, alkyl lactates and castor oil soaps may be included. The composition may be added to engine cooling water to form a 20 to 60% solution.
