abstract | 1,145,101. Sulphonation of fatty acids. UNILEVER Ltd. 17 April, 1967 [2 May, 1966], No. 19248/66. Heading C2C. A process for the production of an alphasulpho fatty acid comprises continuous alphasulphonation of a monocarboxylic saturated fatty acid of formula RCOOH where R is C 8-20 alkyl, in which R is unbranched on the α carbon atom by reacting the acid with SO 3 / diluent gas at 95-150‹C. for a time which is just sufficient to ensure that substantially the whole of the fatty acid which has reacted is present as the α-sulpho derivative. Examples describe the sulphonation of a 50/50 mixture of coconut/tallow fully hardened fatty acid. |
