titleOfInvention Compositions containing polymers of vinyl chloride
abstract 1,142,943. Unsaturated polyester-vinylchloride polymer compositions. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 21 Feb., 1966 [23 Feb., 1965], No. 7454/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B2] A composition comprises (a) polyvinyl chloride, or a copolymer of vinylchloride with less than 50% of vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, and (b) 10 to 60 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of (a) of an unsaturated polyester having a recurring unit of the formula [-G 1 -A 1 -G 2 -A 2 -], where G 1 and G 2 are residues of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) or 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol (NPG), A 1 is the residue of a dibasic acid which is -ophthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, tetrahydrophthalic, fumaric, maleic, adipic, succinic, itaconic, mesaconic, or citraconic, and A 2 is the residue of an unsaturated dibasic acid which is fumaric, maleic, itaconic, mesaconic or citraconic. The polyesters (b) preferably have molecular weights between 1000 and 4000 and suitably may be TMPD/maleic acid, NPG/maleic acid, TMPD/adipic acid/maleic acid, TMPD/isophthalic acid/fumaric acid, and NPG/phthalic acid/maleic acid. Up to 50% by weight of the unsaturated acid residues may be replaced by another aliphatic dibasic acid e.g. azelaic, sebacic, ruberic or glutanic acids. The polyesters are not terminated with monohydric alcohols or monobasic acids e.g. cetyl alcohol or caprylic acid. The compositions may also contain cross-linking agents and polymerization catalysts, typical of the former being 1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate, diallyl phthalate, TMPD-mono and/or dimethacrylates and neopentyl glycol dimethacrylate and/or diacrylate, and of the latter being benzoyl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide, and t-butyl perbenzoate. Other plasticizers (in addition to (b)) may be incorporated e.g. di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, diocyl adipate, butyl benzyl phthalate, the diisobutyrate of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentane diol, poly-2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol adipate terminated with the monoisobutyrate ester of 2,2,4-trimethyl- 1,3-pentane diol, and poly-2,2-dimethyl-1,3- propane diol adipate terminated with 2- ethylhexanol. Other components of the compositions include stabilizers, particularly epoxidized soybean oil, dibasic lead phthalate, dibutyl tin maleate, and certain metal e.g. tin organic complexes, and diluents e.g. toluene, xylene, methylisoamyl ketone and diisobutyl ketone. The compositions may be formed into films and used as coatings.
