titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of detergent alkylate |
abstract | 1,142,604. Detergent alkylates; detergent compositions. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 15 Feb., 1966 [17 Feb., 1965], No. 6652/65. Headings C5D and C5E. Detergent alkylates comprising predominantly internal secondary mono-phenyl C 10-15 alkane isomers, i.e. those in which the phenyl group is not attached at the 2-, 3- and in some cases the 4-position, are prepared by alkylating an excess of benzene with either a chlorination product of 0À1-0À4 mols. chlorine and 1 mol. of C 10-15 alkane or the dehydrochlorination product thereof, in the presence of 1-10% AlCl 3 based on the alkylating agent, distilling the alkylation product to recover a detergent fraction consisting predominantly of the internal isomers and a higher boiling fraction containing the external isomers and alicyclic alkylate, and then either recycling the latter fraction to the alkylation zone where the external isomers isomerize to internal isomers, or heating the latter fraction with benzene and AlCl 3 in a separate isomerization stage followed by distillation of the product to obtain the internal isomers. The fraction to be recycled or isomerized is obtained by careful distillation so as not to obtain isomerization catalyst poisons, details being given. The detergent alkylate product is sulphonated conventionally, neutralized with NaOH, and compounded in heavy-duty detergent compositions with sodium tripolyphosphates, sodium sulphate, and sodium silicate. |
