titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of sulphonation products
abstract 1,140,164. Sulphonation products. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 10 May, 1967 [1 July, 1966], No. 21714/67. Heading C2C. A process for the preparation of surfaceactive sulphonates comprises the sulphonation of a mixture of an aliphatic mono-olefin containing 8-22 carbon atoms and a polyglycolether in which R is C 8-22 alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1-6 alkyl, m is 1 or 2 and n is 1-50 with 1À0-1À3 moles of sulphur trioxide, diluted with air or other inert gases at a concentration of 0À5-10 volume per cent, 1À0-1À3 moles of chlorosulphonic acid or with 0À5-1À0 moles of sulphur trioxide diluted with air or other inert gases at a concentration of 0À5-10 volume per cent followed by 0À2-0À6 moles of chloro-sulphonic acid, the total amount of sulphonating agent used being 1À0-1À3 moles and wherein the sulphonation is conducted at 0-60‹ C. and the product obtained is hydrolysed with alkalis, ammonia, or amines and water at 80-200‹ C., sufficient water being used that the crude sulphonation product is present in a 5-15% solution. The olefins used may be straight chain with a terminal or non-terminal double bond or of formula in which R 1 and R 2 are C 1-18 alkyl and R 3 is H or C 1-18 alkyl. Mixtures of products are obtained, depending on the method employed, containing olefin sulphonates, alkyl sulphobetaines, alkylpolyglycolether sulphates, unsulphated polyglycolethers as well as fatty alcohol sulphates, provided that the polyglycol ethers used as starting materials contain free fatty alcohols.
