A lubricant comprises a major amount of a lubricating oil and 0À1-50 wt. per cent of an alkylated polymer p repared by the simultaneous alkylation and polymerization of one mole of one or two heterocyclic N-vinyl monomers or by the alkylation of a polymer thereof; the monomers being chosen from N-vinyl-2-oxazolidone, N - vinyl 3 - morpholinone, N - vinyl succinimide, N - vinyl piperidine, N - vinyl diglycolylimide, N-vinyl glutarimide and monomers of general formula where R is a C 2 -C 4 alkylene bridge to complete a 5-, 6- or 7-membered heterocyclic ring system, R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, R 2 is hydrogen, C 1 - C 12 alkyl or phenyl, m is 1, 2, 3 or 4, n is 1, 2, 3 or 4 when m is 1 and 2, 3, or 4 when m is greater than 1 and y is 2 or 3; with 0À5-12 moles of a C 8 -C 42 α-olefin in solution in an organic cosolvent in the presence of 0À025-0À30 moles of an organic peroxide catalyst per mole of the olefin at a temperature of 80-200 C. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. alkylene oxide polymers, and esters of adipic, sebacic and azelaic acids. The additives may also be added to heating, jet and fuel oils and gasoline. |
