titleOfInvention Device for monitoring shut-down nuclear reactors
abstract 1,137,519. Reactors. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 14 June, 1966 [17 Sept., 19651, No. 26467/66. Heading G6C. A monitor for a plutonium production nuclear reactor consists of a cobalt wire which is rendered radio-active during neutron irradiation and which incorporates a random arrangement of tungsten wires, opaque to X-rays. The monitor is sealed to the reactor external surface by a resin containing a random array of tungsten or tantalum particles. X-ray photographs of the monitor and seal provide indications of the disposition of the tungsten and hence will reveal any tampering. Repair of cuts by brazing is indicated by the filling in the monitor which is sensitive to temperature changes. In an alternative form, a cobalt wire is contained in a stainless steel tube, subsequently flattened by rolling. Tungsten particles are welded to the external surface.
