titleOfInvention | Improved process for the reaction of alpha-olefins and gaseous sulphur trioxide |
abstract | 1,137,300. Reaction of α-olefines and gaseous sulphur trioxide. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 14 July, 1967 [14 July, 1966], No. 32585/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] A process for preparing a sulphonated reaction mixture comprises reacting gaseous sulphur trioxide or a mixture thereof with an inert gaseous diluent with a thin flowing film of an α-olefin having 10-26 C atoms in the molecule, the reaction being carried out in a reaction zone having two consecutive reaction temperature zones, the olefin being added into the first reaction temperature zone at a temperature defined by the shaded area of Fig. 1 and the sulphur trioxide being introduced at a temperature of at least 50‹ F., the temperature of the reaction mixture then rising to a peak as defined by the shaded area of Fig. 2 and thereafter being adjusted to the temperature of the second reaction temperature zone, the temperature of the second reaction temperature zone being defined by the shaded area of Fig. 3. The first reaction temperature zone being maintained until the reaction is from 50 to 90% complete and the second reaction temperature zone being maintained until the reaction is at least 85% complete. |
