titleOfInvention Dyes and photographic emulsions containing them
abstract 1,137,085. Methine dyes. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 28 Feb., 1966 [1 March, 1965], No. 7595/68. Divided out of 1,137,083. Heading C4P. [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises a dye having the formula wherein W is S, O, Se or -(R<SP>5</SP>)C(R<SP>6</SP>), wherein R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are each alkyl or aryl which may be substituted; R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each H, alkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryl or substituted aryl, aryloxy, halogen, cyano or acetyl; R<SP>11</SP> is a sulphoalkyl group or alkali metal salt thereof; m is 0, 1 or 2; R<SP>12</SP> is H, alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl, but is H when m is 2; R<SP>15</SP> is H, alkyl or aryl and Q is -C(R<SP>14</SP>)=N-, -SC(=S)-, -S-C(=O), -O-C(=S)-, -0- C( = 0)- , -N(R<SP>14</SP>)-C( = S)-, -N(R<SP>14</SP>)-C( = O)-, -C( = O)-N(R<SP>14</SP>)-C( = 0) or -C( = 0)- N(R<SP>14</SP>)-C(=S)-, wherein R<SP>14</SP> is H, alkyl of 1-12 C atoms, substituted alkyl or an aryl or substituted aryl. The invention also comprises dyes of the formula wherein the symbols have the meanings given above. The dyes may be prepared by the usual condensation reactions.
