abstract 1,136,856. 4 - Halogeno - 1,2α:6,7# - bismethylene - #<SP>4</SP> - 3 - keto - steroids. SCHERING A.G. 21 Aug., 1967 [25 Aug., 1966], No. 38441/67. Heading C2U. 4- Halogeno - 1,2α: 6,7# - bismethylene - #<SP>4</SP>-3- keto-steroids, novel when having the formula (wherein X is F, Cl or Br; Y is H 2 or O; Z is αH(#-OR); α-OR(#-COCH 3 ) or α-OH (#-COCH 2 OH) in the form of the bismethylenedioxy derivative, R being H or acyl), are prepared from the corresponding 4-halogeno-#<SP>1</SP>'<SP>4</SP>'<SP>6</SP>- 3-keto-steroids and methyleneating agents. Preferred agents are dimethylmethylenesulphonium oxide or diazomethane (which forms fused-on pyrazoline rings which are subsequently decomposed). 4 - Chloro - 17,20: 20,21 - bismethylenedioxy- #<SP>1</SP>'<SP>4</SP>'<SP>6</SP> - pregnatriene- 3,11 - dione is prepared by chlorination of the corresponding 4-unsubstituted steroid. The steroids of the invention, which may, for example, have gestagenic and ovulation-inhibiting activity, be incorporated in pharmaceutical compositions.
