abstract | 1,135,640. Polyol ethers. UNILEVER Ltd. 20 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 46884/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Compounds having the structure I, wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 5-12 carbon atoms: Z is oxygen, a is 1 or 2; b is 0 or 1; m is 0 or 1; n is 0 or 1; m + n is 1; and R<SP>1</SP> is H, CH 2 OH or CH 3 , are prepared by reacting an epoxide having the structure II with a polyhydroxy compound having the structure HZ(CH 2 ) a CH(OH)R<SP>1</SP> wherein Z is oxygen. The reaction may occur at an elevated temperature of about 135 C. with or without stannic chloride as catalyst for a few hours. The catalyst may be neutralized with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The product is finally distilled at reduced pressure. The products are exemplified by the compounds: 2- hydroxydodecyl 21-hydroxyethyl ether, 2-hydroxydodecyl glyceryl ether, α-decyl-α<SP>1</SP>hydroxy ethyl glyceryl diether, 2-hydroxy-C 11 -C 15 alkyl glyceryl ether. Examples of the polyhydroxy compounds are ethylene glycol, glycerol, 1,2-propanediol. The compounds of the invention may be used alone as detergents or as suds-boosters for non- ionic detergents (see Division C5). |
