A lubricant comprises a base oil having dissolved therein 0À1-10 millimoles per 100 g. oil of one or more diester disulphides of general formula ROOCR<SP>1</SP>-S-S-R<SP>1</SP>COOR where each R is a C 1 -C 3 alkyl group and each R<SP>1</SP> is a C 2 or C 3 saturated polymethylene group. The base oil may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. esters such as di-isooctyl sebacate, polyglycol ethers, polyphenyl ethers, silicate esters and silicones. Disulphides specified are 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dicarboethoxy diethyl disulphide and 3,3<SP>1</SP>-dicarboethoxy di-n-propyl disulphide. |
