titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to nickel plating |
abstract | 1,135,187. Electro-plating with nickel. M. & T. CHEMICALS Inc. Dec.8, 1965 [Dec.21, 1964], No. 52174/65. Heading C7B. Semi-bright Ni is electro-plated from an aqueous acidic Ni plating solution containing a sulphohydrocarbyl oxy-coumarin anion wherein the hydrocarbyl moiety contains at least two carbon atoms and the sulphohydrocarbyl oxy group is substituted on the carbocyclic nucleus of the coumarin group. The compound may have the formula wherein X is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl, alkoxy or aryloxy, M is a cation (e.g. H, alkali metal, Ni, Co or Mg), R is a hydrocarbon group containing at least two carbon atoms and a, b, c, and a are each O or I, the sum of a, b, c, and d being at least 1. The bath may be of the following types:-Watts, sulphamate, fluoborate, chloride-free sulphate or chloride-free sulphamate. The bath may contain an anionic wetting agent e. g. sodium lauryl sulphate or a sodium dialkyl sulphosuccinate. The semi-bright Ni may be deposited on steel, Cu, brass, bronze, Zn or on die-castings bearing a coat of Cu. Anodes may be of Pb or Ni. A relative velocity may be maintained between the bath and cathode, e.g. by ultrasonic vibration, by rotation of the cathode, by pumping the electrolyte over the cathode or by agitation of the electrolyte with propellers. |
