titleOfInvention Process for producing a microporous polyurethane sheet
abstract 1,134,785. Microporous coatings. KANEGAFUCHI BOSEKI K.K. 16 Jan., 1967 [14 Jan., 1966 (2)], No. 2325/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A substrate may have a microporous polyurethane coating by applying thereto a solution in a mutual water miscible organic solvent of a film-forming polyurethane elastomer and urea at a temperature above the gelling temperature of the solution, cooling the solution in contact with the substrate to a temperature at which a gel is formed, removing the urea and organic solvent from the gelled polymer by washing with a liquid which is miscible with the solvent and which is also a solvent for urea but a non solvent for the gelled polymer and drying the gelled polymer. The film-forming polyurethane may be any of those prepared by the chain extension with a diol, polyol or diamine of a prepolymer prepared from an organic diisocyanate and a polyether or polyester. Suitable solvents are N;N-dimethylformamide; N,N-dimethylacetamide; dimethyl sulphoxide; dioxane; methyl ethyl ketone; cyclohexanone; cyclohexanol: ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate; acid ethyl esters and tetrahydrofuran or mixtures thereof. The liquid used in the washing step is preferably water or may be methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol or acetone. Suitable substrates are felts, fabrics, knitted fabrics, and sheets of synthetic resin, glass or metal.
