titleOfInvention Non-heat-shrinkable transparent polyamide film and its production
abstract 1,133,549. Non-heatshrinkable transparent polyamide film. W. R. GRACE & CO. 31 Oct., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966]. No. 49505/67. Heading B5B. Non-heatshrinkable transparent polyamide film is produced from a synthetic, linear, transparent substantially amorphous polyamide derived from terephthalic and/or isophthalic acid and an alkyl-substituted hexamethylene diamine wherein the main hydrocarbon chain carries at least three side chain carbon atoms in the form of one or more alkyl groups by heating the polyamide to a temperature above its melting point but below that at which it will no longer form a coherent film, forming the heated polyamide into a film, and stretching the film at a temperature within the same range to form a film not more than 5 mils thick, e.g. 0À5 to 2 mils thick. The film may be stretched at a temperature above 220‹ C. and up to about 275‹ C. The polymer may be formed into a relatively thick film by such conventional methods as melt extrusion or calendering and the film thus formed may be stretched by hot bubble extrusion or by tentering. The hot polyamide film may be stretched uniaxially or biaxially. The polyamide used in the examples has been formed from terephthalic acid and a mixture of 2,2,4- and 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylenediamine and melts over the range 190‹ to 220‹ C. In an example, the polyamide is formed into a tubular film by melt extrusion through the annular orifice of a die, the melt temperature of the polyamide in the extruder just before reaching the die being 274‹ C. The tubular film is inflated with air at 0À5 inch water gauge as soon as it leaves the die face and the stretched film taken up on a roller. The thickness of the resulting film is 1-2 mils.
