titleOfInvention Hydrocarbon polymers
abstract 1,133,547. Hydrocarbon polymers. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 30 Oct., 1967 [12 Dec., 1966], No. 49115/67. Heading C3P. A polymer consists of units derived from ethylene, an alpha olefin of structural formula R-CH=CH 2 wherein R is an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and ethylidene bicycloheptene. The olefin may be propylene, and the polymer may have a cross-linked content of less than 2% by weight, an iodine number of from 2 to 25, and be suitable for sulphur-curing to form an elastomeric material. The polymer is prepared by polymerizing the units in the presence of a catalyst prepared by mixing at least one of the following vanadium compounds: the tetrachloride, oxytrichloride, acetylacetonate, oxy-bis-(acetylacetonate) or tri-n-butoxyvanadate, with at least one of the following organo-aluminium compounds; R 3 Al, R 2 AlX, RAlX 2 and Al 2 R 3 X 3 wherein R is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and X is a chlorine or a bromine radical. The preferred catalyst is prepared by mixing vanadium oxytrichloride and ethyl aluminium sesquichloride. In the examples, ethylene and propylene, pretreated by passing through a column of aluminium tri-isobutyl in kerosene, and a molecular sieve column, are polymerized in a benzene solvent with 2 - ethylidene bicyclo- [2,2,1]-hept-5-ene using benzene solutions of the preferred catalyst components. The polymerization is stopped by deactivating the catalyst with isopropyl alcohol, and the polymer is then coagulated with isopropyl alcohol containing 2,6-ditertiary butyl cresol, resuspended in isopropyl alcohol and finally dried. The polymeric material is mixed with (1) zinc oxide, tetramethyl thiuram monosulphide and sulphur, or (ii) carbon black, " Circosol ", zinc oxide, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, mercaptobenzothiazole, zinc di-butyl dithiocarbamate, stearic acid and sulphur, and the mixture cured to form an elastomeric product.
