titleOfInvention Polymerisation catalysts
abstract 1,132,425. Polymerization catalysts of #- allyl type. SNAM PROGETTI S.p.A. 11 July, 1967 [12 July, 1966], No. 31948/67. Heading C3P. A polymerization catalyst for ethylenically unsaturated monomers comprises (1) a compound of the formula (#-alkenyl) n MX m , where M is a transition metal of Groups IV to VIII, X is Cl, Br, or I 2 , m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4; and (2) a paraquinone of the formula where Y is a halogen atom, Y<SP>1</SP> a hydrogen or halogen atom, or a hydrocarbon radical of not more than 6 carbon atoms, and Y<SP>11</SP> and Y<SP>111</SP> either together represent part of a ring of carbon atoms or each is as Y<SP>1</SP>. Specified #- alkenyls are bis-(#-allyl)-Ni, bis - (# - crotyl)- Ni, bis - (# - methallyl) - Ni, (# - crotyl NiCl) 2 , bis - (# - cyclopentadienyl) - Ni, bis - (# - cyclo-octadienyl) - Ni, bis - (# - allyl) 2 CoCl, # - tri - phenyl cyclopropenyl NiCl, and (# - allyl) 3 Cr. Suitable quinones are tetrachloro-para-benzoquinone, tetrabromo - para - benzoquinone, 2 - chloro - para - benzoquinone, 2,6 - dibromo - benzoquinone, 2 - chloro - 3 - methyl benzoquinone, and 2 - chloro - 3,5 - dimethyl benzoquinone. The catalyst system may be preformed and " aged ", or formed " in situ". The exemplified monomer is butadiene, but copolymers of butadiene and methylmethacrylate or acrylonitrile may also be made. The polymers are recovered by conventional techniques, e.g. addition of MeOH and an antioxidant.
