Compounds of the general formula (wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents a chlorine, bromine or fluorine atom or a C 1-7 alkyl, C 1-7 alkoxy or benzyl group, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> each represent a chlorine, bromine or fluorine atom or a C 1-7 alkyl or C 1-7 alkoxy group and the broken lines denote optional substituents) are prepared by reacting acetylbromothymine with a compound of the formula in the presence of a metal halide catalyst and decomposing the resulting complex. The preparation of 1-methoxy-4-chloro-3,5- dimethylbenzene and the sodium salt of 5-(2<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP>- trichlorobenzyl)-uracil is described.
